As a rule, anthologies are difficult to rate and review as there are inevitably awful stories mixed in with the epic. This anthology however, being written by only one author, was rather more consistent in appeal, and fortunately was consistently good.
It was wonderful to delve into Pierce's imagination as she explored other cultures and times in the land of Tortall. It was great to catch up with beloved characters as well as to meet new ones. And as always, it was a pleasure to meet new darkings.
I would have to say though, my favourite of the stories was the last in the book, a story called testing. I won't say too much about it as the beauty of most short stories is how they unfold as you read them... but I will say this. It is a gem, and if Tamora ever comes out with any full length books written in the modern age... I will be first inline to buy them.
Not all the stories are worthy of five stars, most are worthy of four... perhaps two stories are only worth three stars. But it is far and away the best anthology I've read and will re-read again in the future. Probably many times.
