It is the idea behind this book that drives it. Not the story, not the characters, not the action packed pacing, because all of these things are abysmal. Were it not for the uniqueness of the society, government, etc and its potential for reality this book would fall flat on its face and never even have been published. Had I read it in the 50ies or 60ies I'm sure I would have been blown away, but I no longer feel it is relevant and in addition to boring writing being confronted with depraved hopelessness of the whole of humanity was not a pleasant read. I'll be honest, I've still got a little bit of the book to go but there are so many better things I could be doing with my life.
